It’s been often said that when we look into a horse’s eyes we find a part of our soul; a part we never thought to be found, and her Black Beauty peaceful gaze in mesmerizing.

There is something spiritually soothing when being very close to a horse. Humans and horses came together around 14,000 years ago, and the bond between our species has never faltered. I have long been fascinated with the soulful expression in their eyes, and to capture something that is difficult to put into words, but intrinsically felt when I share their company.

As eloquently observed by Joni Mitchell “In their eyes shine stars of wisdom and courage to guide men to the heavens”

And on this chilly crisp winter morning I couldn’t have agreed more. In the dawn’s first light this elegant old mare quietly stood as weary wranglers prepped the morning work. Black on black, I passed by her several times on this hazy Santa Barbara morning. One of fifty, she was poised and calm with the familiar repetition of life on the ranch. The sounds of worn leather boots shuffling dirt, saddles and tack carried in the hands that tend to her, comforting her gentle and curious nature, Black Beauty locked her gaze upon my presence guiding me back to that part of my soul often neglected, blessing me with the wisdom and courage that guides men to the heavens.

In 1956 the American Society of Civil Engineering selected seven engineering wonders of the modern world. It named the San Francisco’s Oakland Bridge as one of these wonders.

On November 12, 1936, after three and a half years of exhausting construction by over 8,000 workers, the Oakland Bridge officially opened, displaying its massive suspension span, cantilevered span, and a tunnel that bored through Yerba Buena Island, while connecting the San Francisco peninsula to Oakland with its 8.4 mile double-deck architecture, providing a much needed transit for Bay Area commerce to thrive.

At the time of its completion the bridge was the longest steel structure on the globe, and to this day remains the largest single-tower, self-anchored suspension span in the world. The towers on the western span range in height from 414 to 458 feet above their base plates on the piers, and a newly added eastern tower standing 526 feet, provide 220 feet of clearance for the thousands ships that supply Northern California and the bay area, and the over 102 billion vehicles that travel between San Francisco and Oakland each year.

In latin, “Ferrum Equo” translates to “Iron Horse”. Not to be confused with her younger and much heralded younger sister to the West, the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge truly is and engineering marvel, the undisputed bay area iron work horse, providing the lifeline of commerce and transit for the city by the bay.

El Matador “The Eyes of Medusa” ~

The ancient Greeks feared her. The Romas envisioned her as a ravishingly beautiful maiden, “…the jealous aspiration of many suitors…”

Over millennia, El Matador has seduced eyes, and inspired imaginations of all that experience her intoxicating beauty and form. She is simply exquisite, a masterpiece of nature, a photographers fantasy…

The Greek rule with Medusa is this, “Don’t look into her eyes.” It is said that, looking into Medusa’s eyes, at least for men, means a total loss of power, complete impotency, the inability to move or speak.

From my many experiences in her presence, I concur. She overwhelms your senses, takes your breath away.

In Spanish, the literal translation “El Matador” means “The Killer”.

For the ancient Spanish ocean explores, her exquisite beauty must have been both intoxicating and perilous. Protected by her sharp jagged rocks and sheer cliffs, her allure must have been overpowering to ship captains, lured by her captivating beauty, venturing into her dangerous waters, only to loose both lives and ships, as her savage rocks ripped holes in the wooden hulls of those who dared to declare her tamed.

On this morning, she was kind to this old explorer. She granted me access with a welcoming tide and calm seas. I was graced and honored to record an intimate moment between her and some hearty locals, as the birth of a new day in history of El Matador, “The Eyes of Medusa” unfolded.
