“Ferrum Equo” | Oakland Bay Bridge
San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge San Francisco, California
In 1956 the American Society of Civil Engineering selected seven engineering wonders of the modern world. It named the San Francisco’s Oakland Bridge as one of these wonders.
On November 12, 1936, after three and a half years of exhausting construction by over 8,000 workers, the Oakland Bridge officially opened, displaying its massive suspension span, cantilevered span, and a tunnel that bored through Yerba Buena Island, while connecting the San Francisco peninsula to Oakland with its 8.4 mile double-deck architecture, providing a much needed transit for Bay Area commerce to thrive.
At the time of its completion the bridge was the longest steel structure on the globe, and to this day remains the largest single-tower, self-anchored suspension span in the world. The towers on the western span range in height from 414 to 458 feet above their base plates on the piers, and a newly added eastern tower standing 526 feet, provide 220 feet of clearance for the thousands ships that supply Northern California and the bay area, and the over 102 billion vehicles that travel between San Francisco and Oakland each year.
In latin, “Ferrum Equo” translates to “Iron Horse”. Not to be confused with her younger and much heralded younger sister to the West, the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge truly is and engineering marvel, the undisputed bay area iron work horse, providing the lifeline of commerce and transit for the city by the bay.
