POWER, PRECISION, GRACE, ELEGANCE

Professional Editorial & Equestrian Show Photography by Marshal Hilton

As an old-school storyteller and creative, I am fascinated with revealing the nuanced layers of human behavior, how we interact with our environment, and the often unseen tasks of daily life in the pursuit of dreams.

As with any craft endeavor, discipline, passion, focus, determination, resilience, and perseverance are the attributes that guide excellence.

Having been a lover of horses, ranch life, livestock, and the equine community for as long as I can remember, barn life is one of my happy places, a destination of peace that calms my soul and inspires my imagination.

I have been an artist for most of my life; creating moments that inspire the imagination has forever been my muse. Be it music, writing, a great script, art, or, in this case, curiosity and a camera, the joy of investigating and revealing the essence of my subject is my purpose, my muse. It’s not just what they aspire to accomplish, but the cultivating and presenting of their process and how they endeavor. Editorial photography gives me the canvas to tell their entire story, a character study from the beginning, the middle, and the end. An editorial approach to equestrian action photography allows me to record the fine details of their journey – their craft, their process, and the competitive nature and drama of sport.

My journey to equestrian action photography has passed through my thirty-year career in the entertainment industry as a storyteller, and a passion for fine art, nature, and landscape photography. My soul demands being outside, breathing fresh air, and experiencing an amazing vista. I love arising at dawn, getting dirty if need be, and I welcome the satisfaction of a hard day’s work, bruises and all. I also relish environments that require laser focus, inspire my imagination, and challenge all aspects of my mind and technical skills; if it’s boring and mundane, you will find me nowhere close, and working as an official Equestrian Show Jumper photographer checks all the boxes. It can be intense, thrilling, and creatively challenging; the pace at larger events is often relentless; eight-, ten-, and twelve-hour days running a rail in the heat of summer will challenge all of your physical and photography skills like no other. It commands one hundred percent of your attention the moment each rider and horse team reaches the gate. The riders deserve great coverage, a “Cover Shot”, and it’s my job to do everything possible to record their performance.

Capturing a magical image is just the beginning of my creative process. Coming from the Fine Art Nature and Landscape photography world, the “ART” of our work is rooted in composition and the post-processing of our images. Artful photo editing is the “sweet sauce” that can turn a decent photo into a “WOW” image. Because I process my images with an artful Fine Art approach, it is one of the reasons that my photos look the way they do. In landscape and nature photo processing, we use a wide variety of editing techniques to enhance an image, and make our prints “explode off a wall”. The business of fine art photography is to present and sell our images as art prints, not just photos. We present an enhanced version of reality. Our creative goal is to stop people dead in their tracks and have them say “WOW!”

Incorporating the same ideas and fine art editing techniques I use in my limited edition landscape and nature works provides me the visual canvas to create high-definition equestrian action images that look truly unique.

In my duties as an official show photographer, I shoot to the technical specs as required by my vendor/employer. Generally, they will require shooting smaller file .jpgs for small-screen social media deliverables.

When photographing a private client, I shoot from the perspective of creating Fine Art imagery. All of My images are custom edits. I do not batch-process any of my work. My state-of-the-art Sony cameras are 42 megapixels, full frame, and mirrorless sensors. The files they record are large RAW uncompressed file images that, when processed correctly, deliver razor-sharp prints as large as eighty inches or more. Over many years, I have developed relationships with some of the finest museum-grade fine art printers in the United States. Whatever surface you desire, be it a framed museum-grade acrylic Face Mount, Metal, Canvas, or Archival Paper surface, the Fine Art quality prints we create are second-to-none, lifetime, multi-generational works. You can find more information on my fine art prints here.

In closing, I’m an old-school storyteller with a camera. I’m intensely curious, intuitive, and instinctively creative. I love traveling, horses, dogs, ranch property, mountains, green grass, sunrises, sunsets, beaches, BBQs, campfires, and a fine evening Bourbon, cigar optional. I crave the discovery process of long-form photojournalism, but I also thrive on the challenge and intensity of Equestrian Action Photography. Either way, I’ve got your needs covered.

The business of Personal and Business branding at a professional level is a long-term, consistent commitment. Adding unique, top-level imagery and thoughtful storytelling to your marketing mix is imperative to position your brand, separating you and your product from the competition, and creating an emotional connection with your audience.

If you’re a barn owner, team owner, rider, sponsor, or event promoter/manager looking to elevate your media visuals in the equestrian space, I welcome the opportunity to speak with you and tell your story.

Until then…

Be Well, Stay Safe, and as always, Knees-Up!
