“Hudson 36′” | Hudson Terraplane
Open Edition | Black and White Fine Art Print
1936 Hudson Terraplane
In the shadows of America’s Great Depression, faint drums pounding of eminent war in Europe, the 1936 Hudson Terraplane traversed the narrow dusty roads of America. As Jesse Owens humiliated Nazi Germany and Adolph Hitler’s “Aryan Supermen” at the 1936 Olympics, Hitler’s alliance with Italy’s Mussolini and Japan’s Emperor Hirohito set in motion the global beginnings of WWII with Germany breaking the Treaty of Versailles. As President Franklin Delano Roosevelt basked in his re-election, the Queen Mary took her maiden voyage across the Atlantic, as American writer Margaret Mitchell presented her Pulitzer Prize winning novel Gone with the Wind. Witnessing the births of entertainment legends Roy Orbison, Robert Redford, Michael Landon, Kris Kristofferson, Glen Campbell, and Charlie Daniels, the Hudson Motor Company’s 1936 Terraplane showcased her new body design while setting a speed record of 86.54 mph for 24 hours at the Bonneville Salt Flats during October of 1936.
On this windy winter afternoon, as I approached her rusted decaying hulk buried in a grassy meadow near the mountain town of Julian California, flashes of black and white Great Depression era movie reels flashed in my imagination. Beaten and savaged over eighty-five years of natures seasons and thousands of miles traveled, her body all but gone, her glory was undeniable, her pride shown in her massive art-deco inspired grill. I could hear the faint sounds of a whispering Victrola spinning the musical stylings of Billie Holiday, Tommy Dorsey, Fred Astaire and Blues legend Robert Johnson. A relic of a distant time, she had once graced the roads of America during some of our nation’s darkest hours, as America’s industrial age and economic prosperity would soon be challenged on the world stage.
