“Tranquility” | The Little Pier

All but hidden away under the cover of seaside bluffs, away from the prying eyes of curiosity, this lovely little pier secretly stands in tranquility. Unbeknownst to me, I had driven by her hundreds of times in my journeys up and down this slice of highway 101. I found her quite by accident and knew nothing of her, yet I was curiously intrigued. A hasty 4:00am journey into the unknown, without guidance or map, hiking down the steep bluffs on this moonless night was the thrill of the hunt, regardless of the perilous path I was navigating. Upon landing on the beach I was greeted with “Private Property, No Trespassing”; words to be considered, they only heightened my desire to meet her. This was why I had never seen any images of her. She was on private property, and on costal land protected by the State. What made it even worse was that I could hear her at work, but she was a quarter mile away and out of site. I just stood there, on the beach, alone, in the dark, with my gear, thinking. I had come this far and I could taste it. It was too much for me to take, I had to meet her. So with the darkness and bluffs as my cover, I took the risk and made haste to find her before dawns light.
I have seen many piers in my life on the West coast of California, but never one such as this. Small and stout, made of steel, she wasn’t a relic of the past, but an integral part of the present, a working pier for the oil platforms that dot the Santa Barbara coastline. As I quietly set up my gear and waited for first light, I could feel my heart racing, wondering if I would be discovered by the voices that could be heard from above me, as tucks drove the small pier and dropped off the workers to be picked up by the boats that carried them to their charter. As she came into view I knew she would keep our secret. This morning’s light had a soft auburn smoke hue, fueled by the recent wild fires that had ravaged southern California the week prior, as if painted in concert with her weathered rusty exterior. It was truly a sublime, still, and tranquil moment. The risk I had taken was well worth the moment. I chose a long exposure to add a finishing touch to the ocean’s calm morning glass, as she blessed me with “Tranquility”
